Term 4, Week 2, 2019 - Devotion

I recently celebrated my sixty-ninth birthday and have therefore entered into the Biblical three score and tenth year of my life. This alone can make a person a little reflective. On top of that, over recent weeks the pastoral team at my church have preached through the book of Ecclesiastes (or Koheleth as it is known in the Hebrew.) It is a beautiful example of Hebrew Wisdom Literature and has been a favourite of mine over many years, in the easy times and in the very hard times.

The Teacher gives his summary of a life spent seeking the ultimate truths: Life can be hard and disappointing but ultimately it is a gift from God to be simply enjoyed

Similarly, the great meaning that the Teacher sought all his life was equally straight forward.
13 Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the duty of all mankind.
14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 NIV

At the beginning of all things …God.
At the end of all things …God.
And as we journey from beginning to end …God with us, Immanuel.
