Lest We Forget

2019 11 11 lest we forgetRemembrance Day, also referred to as Armistice Day. The eleventh day of the eleventh month. A date which commemorates that day in 1918 when peace was declared, marking the end of “The Great War” - World War One.

This was an era of history when over eight per cent of our population enlisted to fight in the war. Tragically, more than half of that contingent lost their lives, were wounded or taken prisoner.

This is also a day when we remember those other Australians who sacrificed their lives in the conflicts to follow - from WW1 through to Afghanistan. There have been 102,000 Australian lives lost in war time.

Today is a day of expressing gratitude to those who never returned home, as well as to the survivors who suffered with a lifetime of physical, mental and emotional scarring. We also think today of their families and loved ones who were impacted by this suffering.

Staff and students at Pacific Hills have paused and paid our respects to the fallen today with a minute’s silence and prayers at 11 o’clock.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
