NAPLAN – Years 3, 5, 7 & 9

2017 hsc examsIn May, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will complete the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) in all schools across Australia. The tests allow the Federal and State Governments and the Education bodies within each state to assess the literacy and numeracy learning of students and to determine appropriate minimum standards and benchmarks for student performance and achievement.

Student Background information, including name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality, which was collected as part of enrolment, will be made available to administrators of the National Assessment Program. This information is provided and only used in ways that are in keeping with the National Privacy legislation and individual results will be held in the strictest confidence.

The tests will be completed by all candidates on the same days, in keeping with the following schedule.

  • Tuesday 14 May: Language Conventions test (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) and a separate Writing test
  • Wednesday 15 May: Reading test
  • Thursday 16 May: Numeracy test

Friday 17 May is a designated “catch-up” day for students who have been absent on any of the previous three days.

Students may be considered for exemption from the testing program if they are recent arrivals to Australia (within the last year) from regions where the language was other than English or if they display significant intellectual and/or functional disability.

All other students, including those with more mild but confirmed disabilities or learning difficulties, are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided to meet the needs of individual students.

Access to Disability adjustment or approval of exemption of students must be as result of consultation between the school and parents and requires signed parent consent. Should you wish to discuss access to Disability adjustments for your child or exempting or withdrawing your child from participation in the NAPLAN testing please contact the appropriate Head of School before 7 March 2019.

Information about NAPLAN can be found at their website

Please contact your child’s teacher or Year Advisor should you have any questions.
