Experiencing The Global Refugee Challenge

2019 08 02 global refugee challenge web 04Every day 44,400 people worldwide are forced to flee their homes! This staggering statistic comes from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). As part of their ‘Global Challenges’ course, Year 11 Geography students participated in the eye-opening program ‘Refugee Camp in my Neighbourhood’. This simulated two-hour program, held in Auburn, gave students the opportunity to experience the very real challenges that refugees face such as fleeing home, crossing borders into another country and fighting for a lifejacket before packing into a rickety boat. It was a sobering experience and one they will remember for a long time to come. The class also conducted an urban study of Auburn, where they tried different multicultural foods and saw the vast array of ethnic stores.
