Sydney Water Excursion

2019 06 21 sydney water web 01Year 12 Chemistry students, along with Mrs Tonge and Mrs Luk, have visited the Sydney Water Waste Treatment Facility at St Marys.

They toured the facility and learnt about the different stages required to process waste water before it can be released back into the environment.

The specific link to the Chemistry syllabus was the use of and role that polymers have in reverse osmosis and the flocculation process.

They competed several experiments so each student could complete their HSC Chemistry Depth Study on testing water quality and measuring the effect of polymers on water treatment.

The visit was a valuable opportunity to develop an appreciation of this important real-world chemistry application in an area that most of us give little to no thought to.
