Language Day Is Magnifique!

language day previewA ball game dating back to the 1700’s…models of the Eiffel Tower and tasty croissants were just some of the highlights of the Year 8 Language Day which involved French, English and Maths in Practice students.

The group was split into two so that whilst some students enjoyed French indoor activities the others participated in outdoor activities.

Mr Duncan, Mrs Gillespie, Mrs Hall and Mrs Waters took indoor activities which included building a Biboquet. This traditional cup and ball game dates back as far as 16th century France and was even enjoyed by kings such as Henry III and Louis XV! Students decorated and constructed their own version of the game, and then used their creations to compete with each other to win chocolate prizes (e.g. who could correctly land the ball in their cup the most amount of times in a row).

The students constructed miniature Eiffel Towers using a combination of spaghetti, marshmallows, rubber bands and PVA glue. Chocolates were awarded to teams who built the tallest or most accurate replicas. They also played a traditional French narrative card game called “Werewolf’.

Culinary highlights included French-style pastries such as croissants and pains au chocolat.

Mr Fuller and Mr Bolton led outdoor activities such as Petanque (otherwise known as boules) and Lacrosse. Boules is similar to lawn bowls and involves teams placing their boules closest to the target. Lacrosse is a French word which stands for “the stick”.

Overall, it was a great day of activities and it gave students a broad understanding of French culture.
