The Great North Walk

2018 11 13 dofe bronze qualifying journey web 13Difficulties can affect people in many different ways. For some, it can spur them onwards to greater heights. Others may get discouraged and give up, and others may continue as it nothing has happened, ignoring the difficulty and not learning for the experience. Difficulties and more importantly, the way we handle those difficulties, develop our character.

The Bronze Duke of Edinburgh participants were faced with a degree of difficulty on the second day of their Qualifying Adventurous Journey. Two groups (Mr Chew and Mrs Munro’s groups) were faced with a long 13 kilometre walk and a tight schedule to maintain. The two groups responded by getting up very early, being efficient in packing up and were on the trail before 7:00am. The other two groups (Mrs Chambers and Mr Lees’ groups) had to be across the Berowra Waters Ferry by 12:00pm to avoid being stranded until the regular ferry maintenance was completed. Mrs Chambers and Mr Lees’ groups completed their journeys, including a hill climb of 160 vertical metres from Sam’s Creek to Berowra Waters Lookout, and were at the ferry with almost an hour to spare.

All the groups responded to the challenges with positive attitudes and showed courage and teamwork. The challenges were overcome and the students were very satisfied with their efforts.

Two groups, (Mr Chew and Mrs Munro’s groups) left Berowra Waters Ferry on Monday 12 November and made their way up and down the undulating terrain to camp at Crosslands Reserve. On the following day, they walked the 13 kilometres to Hornsby via Galston Gorge arriving just after 1:30pm. They had set a cracking pace and achieved their goal of completing their journey with time to spare.

The other two groups (Mrs Chambers and Mr Lees’ groups) did the reverse trip. They started at Hornsby, camped overnight at Crosslands and finished at beautiful Berowra Waters Ferry.

The students now have to write a log of their journey and complete the remaining parts of their Physical, Skills and Volunteering Sections before they qualify to complete their Bronze Level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.

Such a journey is only possible with the wonderful leadership shown by the dedicated teachers Mr Chew, Mrs Munro and Mrs Chambers. We also express our thanks to Steve, Ash, Austin, Kate and Tom from the Outdoor Education Group who assisted us to minimize and control risks in our Adventurous Journeys, whilst at the same time providing challenge and excellent training.

However, as was stressed to the students, this was a journey, not a destination. The journey of learning and character development continues. However, the success of overcoming the difficulties on this Adventurous Journey will allow the students to face similar and greater challenges in the future with renewed confidence.
