The Awards were presented at St Stephens Church, Macquarie Street, Sydney and afterwards at Government House in the Botanic Gardens. Mr Waters, Mrs O’Neil and Mr Lees were privileged to attend the ceremonies.

To complete the Gold Level of Duke of Edinburgh’s International Awards was a significant achievement, requiring years of commitment and service. These students spent three hours per week for a year participating in physical activities, learning and practising skills and serving the community. They also completed two four day / three night Adventurous Journeys and a five day residential project. Eight of the students participated on the 2016 Tour of New Zealand, walking the magnificent 35 km long Routeburn and 55km long Milford Tracks. Minette and Daniel completed their Adventurous Journey by canoeing 60 km along the Myall Lakes.

In Year 9 of Senior School, these ten students commenced their Duke of Edinburgh International Award, completing their Bronze Level. During Year 10, they completed the Silver Level, which set longer and higher expectations. Finally, in Years 11 and 12 they completed the pinnacle achievement, the Gold Award, which is an internationally recognised and highly prestigious award.

In his address, The Governor of NSW, The Right Honourable General David Hurley urged the Gold Awardees to remember that, “The Standard you Walk Past is the Standard you Set.” He implored the students to set high personal, moral standards of integrity and reminded them that first and foremostly, integrity comes from the faith within. He also gave leadership advice, encouraging the awardees that “While they needed an Ego to Lead, they should not Lead with an Ego.” General Hurley enthusiastically endorses the award and enjoys meeting these special young people.

These ten students’ names will soon be included on the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Honour Board in the School Foyer, and they will be invited to attend the Whole School Assembly on the last day of Term Two.

The Duke of Edinburgh International Awards form a significant part of the Senior School Culture at Pacific Hills Christian School. Later this term, four groups of Bronze students will bushwalk in the Southern Highlands, in Silver, three canoeing and one bushwalking group will undertake a three day two night adventurous journey and a canoeing Gold group will undertake a four day and three night canoeing trip. Later this year, and again in 2019, Pacific Hills will be sending Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award students to bushwalk the Routeburn and Milford Tracks in Fiordland on the South Island of New Zealand.

To achieve a Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a significant achievement and shows amazing perseverance, sincere commitment and is a true tribute to the character of the person. It takes a special sort of person to reach to the very highest level. We warmly congratulate and applaud these fine young people and expect to hear of further significant successes.
