PHCS Coding Club

So Mr Jaques and Mrs Kirkegard approached Microsoft to see what technology would best engage and extend these Middle School students. Thanks to the generosity of Microsoft in providing the Micro:bit devices, the Pacific Hills Christian School Coding Club was born!

Last Tuesday marked the beginning of the PHCS Coding Club. For our first meeting we were anticipating 3-4 students, but ended up with over 20 students participating! The enthusiasm and excitement was awesome to witness. Students were paired up and were presented with a Micro:bit device, which is essentially a mini computer that can fit into the palm of your hand. After an initial demonstration from Mr Jaques, students were left to their own devices to use and develop their creative and critical thinking skills. Many projects were created in this short time. One program was a Valentine’s Day inspired one, which displayed a love heart picture and the words “I love you” after a button was pressed. Another group built a compass, which displayed directions.

The inaugural meeting was a roaring success. Students had fun, stretched their imaginations and learnt some important coding skills. It is going to be an amazing year for the PHCS coding club!

If you are a Middle School student and are interested in coding and/or computing, the Coding Club will run every Tuesday lunchtime in S1.9.
