Mathematics Challenge

2017 07 31 maths challenge 04On July 31 2017, eight Year 9 Augustine students were invited to attend the annual North Sydney Region Maths Challenge for talented Mathematics students from across the region. Over 15 Independent Schools from various parts of Sydney took part in this competition held at the Pymble Ladies College. Soon after they arrived at the venue, students were grouped with three other students from different schools and the teachers were each assigned a group of students not from Pacific Hills Christian School.

The challenge started with ten different problems to be solved, either individually or as a group. At first, the students attempted these activities on their own, but soon realised that they could do much better is they worked as a team.

After morning tea, students were paired with one of their team members and had to solve a special maths crossword puzzle. One team had to work on the ‘down’ clues and the other on the ‘across’. Communication had to happen through the teacher and teams were not allowed to talk to each other. The puzzles were complicated and required an enormous amount of brainpower to solve!
After lunch a relay challenge kept the students running backwards and forwards with problem solving and passing on answers and new problems to their team members.

The competition between teams was fierce, but Lachlan Vos’ team achieved a second place overall, which was an excellent achievement. PHCS students all worked extremely well and enjoyed the day and the many challenges they had to face. Mrs De Bruyn and Mrs Chapman accompanied the students Jiho Baek, Dominic Chan, Lachlan George, Susan Lee, Sharni Selzer, Lachlan Vos, Georgia Wang, and Saki Yoshizumi to this exciting event.
