Sydney Academy of Sport Excursion

2017 06 05 yr12 pdhpe excursion web 09On Monday 5th June, HSC PDHPE students had the opportunity to visit one of Sydney’s leading sporting institutes, the Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen. The Academy’s elite sports unit sees athletes from a wide variety of sports in order to train, test, analyse data and ultimately use the information to improve their performance.

Students participated in a variety of activities that included testing of the energy systems and resistance training in the gym. Another activity involved a practical contrast hydrotherapy session where students alternated between pools of hot and cold water. This is a strategy used by athletes to aide their recovery post performance.
During the day students saw the Rio Olympics Gold Medallist Women’s Rugby 7’s team train on both the field and in the gym, with some very impressive results. They also saw Servicemen and women training for the Invictus Games which will be held in Sydney next year.

It was a great day for students to further their understanding of training and recovery, and experience firsthand how the study of sport science can be used to improve performance.
